I find it odd when America First "freedom proponents" take a hard line stance on cannabis and don't want you to have the freedom to possess or ingest a simple plant. This is one issue I think some conservatives have wrong, but liberals go about the process of legalization all wrong, too. Another one of those issues where I think everyone sucks. I shall explain:
The government should have no say what I do with my own body or land as long as I am not harming anyone or harming property. I understand that government regulation is warranted if commerce is engaged in, but they can piss off if I am keeping to myself.
Granted, the way in which some of these liberal states are decriminalizing/legalizing marijuana is ass backwards. I disagree with their act of decriminalizing the illegal growing of cannabis, making it a misdemeanor instead of a felony. This is incentivizing Cartels to move into these liberal states and conduct illegal grow ops, destroying the environment of the areas in which they do this and bringing more crime into these regions. This interview with John Nores on the Ironclad podcast discusses this topic in depth, he served as a Game Warden for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for more than 25 years and helped develop an elite tactical unit targeting cartel drug operations on California’s public lands.
Also ass backwards is the way that liberal states are taking their tax profits from marijuana sales and putting that money into welfare programs and woke nonsense. I lived in Washington State for most of my life until recently, and I remember when they were the first state to legalize cannabis in 2012. Last I checked, which I believe was for fiscal year 2022, they make about $500 million per year on cannabis tax profits, about half of which they put into state run healthcare programs (that non-citizens can also get). California makes about $800 million per year in cannabis tax revenue, with some of that going to their public universities and welfare programs, too. I’m all for funding schools, but not when they’re pushing brainwashing, woke nonsense.
There are far better ways that cannabis tax revenue could be utilized by these states. Legalize recreational marijuana use, keep the illegal growing a felony (especially on public land), and use the tax revenue for much better things. Get to it, politicians.
There is then the conversation of the way in which marijuana plants are being grown in our modern times. Hybridization has turned what used to be mild cannabis plants with lower THC levels into highly concentrated strains with 30+% of THC in the flower, and you also have the THC concentrates smoked in dabs that are pummeling people’s brains and giving them psychosis from so much THC ingestion. Today’s weed ain’t the same weed our grandparents were smoking.
I hit a dab once in my early 20s - worst weed experience of my life. Never did that again.
The weed culture of “just trying to get high” is definitely one that is immature and ruining people’s lives making them unproductive, lazy, and dumb. Too many people smoking marijuana as a crutch to escape their problems. I’ve been there, getting high every single day with that kind of escapist mentality. These days I’ve reduced my usage to a couple times a month, if that, and I’m far more productive. And when I do smoke the herb, I specifically look for the low THC strains, usually around 10-15%, or just use a small amount of an edible - enough to get the job done. You don’t need all that much THC when you’re not an addict with super high tolerance.
At the same time, there are notable medicinal and beneficial uses for cannabis. I’m of the belief that the occasional usage, when done consciously and maturely, can be resourceful.
”Moderation is key”, but you need to moderate the moderation, too. Not a little bit all the time, just a little bit, sometimes.
I think the whole concept of “drugs” is lazily thought out by many. Proponents of keeping marijuana illegal criticize it as being a harmful drug - but their “drug” definition is not well thought out. Pharmaceuticals are drugs, legally. And at the same time you could also call alcohol a drug, tobacco a drug, caffeine a drug, sugar and food could also be considered drugs. People using these substances to “feel good” and escape their problems. Porn is a drug, TV is a drug, and so on and so on.
So that’s not to say “drugs” are always bad - alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine can have their benefits, along with their detriments, as any “drug”. Pharmaceuticals, too. The point is to be responsible with the choices being made - when it comes to marijuana, unfortunately most users are not doing so responsibly. Some are, but most aren’t.
The last point I find ridiculous and that society needs to rethink isn’t so much regarding the “getting high” THC aspect to cannabis but the industrial use of hemp. Hemp plants grow incredibly fast, almost like bamboo, and have a million different uses from textiles, paper, clothing, biodiesel, food and hygiene products. You can even make concrete out of hemp, “hempcrete”, that’s quite strong and durable. It’s absurd that some states continue to keep the growing of hemp for industrial purposes illegal, because “green plant bad”. I blame the mega-corporate lobbyists in federal and state governments for that one.
All that said, it’s stupid how in 2024 some governments still feel the need to tell you what you can and can’t do with your body (*cough*vaccine certificates*cough*). It’s also stupid what some people are doing to their bodies, even if what they’re doing is legal.
Maybe one day we can grow up as a society and become collectively responsible humans. Or maybe a giant solar flare will take us out before that. I’m 50/50 on which one happens first.

This social development wound up being more about regulating the small guy, than legalizing the benefits of CBD/THC. Everything in moderation, including moderation, I like to say!

I would add that our social use of these plants is indicative of our social maturity - a 'social barometer' perhaps. When you see a society that can use these plants properly, wisely, and. productively - then we know a truly mature civilisation has been reached. We are some way off that as yet, to understate drastically. These are indeed power plants - and the misuse of power is always possible with true freedom. It is the price we pay for freedom.
